Officially known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles (Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria), Jaro Cathedral is a prominent religious and historical landmark located in Jaro, Iloilo City. The church is of Romanesque Revival style and features semi-circular arches and ceiling with statues of male saints placed in the main pillars. The facade features stairs over the main entrance, leading up to the statue of Our Lady of Candles which is believed to be miraculous.
The bell tower, located across the busy street, is a remnant of an earlier church destroyed by an earthquake.
Within the church grounds are structures including the adoration chapel, administrative offices, and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Kinder School. Vendors selling religious items and candles can also be found within the church grounds near the main entrance.
Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is the official Roman Catholic patron of Western Visayas and Romblon with Jaro recognized as the “center of Candelaria devotion in the Philippine islands”.
Jaro Cathedral celebrates its annual fiesta every 2nd of February. One of the biggest religious events in Iloilo, many devotees flock the cathedral to hear mass, attend the procession, and pay homage to the Virgin Mary.
